On Hari Raya Haji, 7 June 2025, Nee Soon MPs Minister K Shanmugam, Ms Goh Hanyan, Mr Jackson Lam, Ms Lee Hui Ying, and Dr Syed Harun Alhabsyi visited two mosques in the constituency to mark the occasion and connect with residents. Former Nee Soon MP Associate Professor Faishal Ibrahim also joined the visits. Their first stop was Masjid Ahmad Ibrahim, followed by the newly renovated Masjid Darul Makmur.
Hari Raya Haji holds deep significance in the Muslim faith. It commemorates the spirit of devotion and sacrifice, and is a time of prayer, reflection, and unity. For Muslim residents of Nee Soon, this year’s celebration took on an even deeper meaning with the reopening of Darul Makmur Mosque after two years of extensive upgrading works.
Originally opened in 1987, Masjid Darul Makmur underwent a $15 million facelift beginning in April 2023. During the renovation period, congregants performed their religious rites at a temporary prayer site located at the former North View Secondary School in Yishun Ring Road. The reopening was a joyous moment for many, especially those who had patiently adapted to the temporary arrangements.
The upgraded mosque can now accommodate up to 4,000 worshippers, up from its previous capacity of 3,000. Enhancements include a more spacious prayer hall, barrier-free access with ramps and a new lift, as well as improved facilities for religious classes and community programmes.
Dr Harun noted that the upgrading involved getting support from government bodies such as Singapore Land Authority and the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS). It was a collective effort made possible by close cooperation between mosque leadership, government agencies, and grassroots organisations.
As the MPs toured the reopened mosque and met with residents, volunteers, and staff, the atmosphere was one of warmth, gratitude, and celebration. It was a meaningful way to honour the values of the season — faith, community, and a renewed sense of togetherness.
