A vibrant display of tradition and community spirit set the stage for the grand reopening of Nee Soon Town Council’s newly renovated main office at Block 290 Yishun Street 22. The milestone event, held on 1 February 2025, was graced by Minister K. Shanmugam, Grassroots Adviser to Nee Soon GRC, alongside fellow Advisers Assoc Prof Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim and Mr Louis Ng, Chairman of Nee Soon Town Council Mr Derrick Goh, Vice-Chairperson Ms Carrie Tan, and other guests.
The morning kicked off with a spectacular lion dance performance, a time-honoured symbol of prosperity and good fortune. The ‘Cai Qing’ ceremony, accompanied by the rhythmic beats of drums and cymbals, followed soon after the Minister’s arrival. Adding a touch of festivity, a big-headed doll portraying the Chinese God of Wealth weaved through the crowd, delighting onlookers — residents out for their morning walks, families from the nearby playground, and patrons at the coffeeshop who paused to soak in the joyous atmosphere.

In his address, Minister Shanmugam reflected on the building’s rich history, noting that the town council office was originally built in 1991 and had not undergone major renovations in 34 years. He underscored the significant enhancements, including a more conducive working environment for staff, improved privacy for confidential discussions, and a commitment to sustainability, with the new building designed to consume 30% less electricity.
Following his speech, Minister Shanmugam, together with the other Nee Soon MPs, unveiled a commemorative plaque, officially marking the reopening of the town council office. As confetti rained down and cheers erupted, the ceremony concluded with a lively ‘Lo Hei’ session — a cherished tradition where attendees joyfully tossed raw fish slices to symbolise good fortune and unity in the year ahead.
The reopening of the Nee Soon Town Council’s main office stands as a testament to the town’s commitment to excellence, sustainability, and community-driven progress.
